Philippines, Part One *Un-flocked by Request*

Okay so, literally YEARS ago, there was one of those 5 things memes going around and keenai asked me to post about my top five moments from my time overseas. I never did. This isn't exactly a proper five things post, but these are some pictures from one of the best days I spent in the Philippines, when we traveled to the village where my grandfather grew ( Read more... )

That sounded like a very good day to me! I loved how you were able to find relatives in the barangay. I just love how nice and accommodating people living in the provinces are. It always made fieldwork easy for me, lol!

And the first GK site is just lovely. The site I went to was also still in the construction stage so there were only a handful of people living there when we visited. But I'm sure by now they have a whole community living out there already.

Did you ever get to go up to Baguio? That's where I went to college. I loved studying there. The place where my school is located is just beautiful!!!

Thanks for sharing your lovely day with us! :)

I was so thrilled to find family! I was amazed by how everyone we talked to wanted to join us and help or give suggestions as to who would know more! So fun! It was a bit overwhelming to have so many people investing their day into what could have turned out to be a wild goose chase, but it was absolutely lovely!

We didn't make it to Baguio! We almost took a bus from Agoo to Baguio so that we could be there a bit before going back to Manila, but we already knew where the bus station in San Fernando was so we just went there and spent the evening at an open-air market in the middle of town.

Thanks for reading! :)

It really was an amazing day! Family history on my mom's side is a big blank because my grandmother was adopted in the rural US south, so there are no records on that end (what we do know seems very American Gothic [reasons to suspect that her adoptive family was her biological family as well] and I don't know if I want to know more) and PopPop's family died in the war and that was almost all he ever said about them ( ... )

That's where I grew up, and where I'm marooned for a bit, the US Rural South. Heh. Given my dad's recent heart attack, I'll be down here indefinitely. *That* will probably be my book - cultural differences between NYC and NC.

And speaking of books...there's a book from a while ago called The Dim Sum of All Things - a first-gen Asian writer. While the cultures are different, the familial stuff will seem, well, familiar. Loved that book.

Also, while I'm not vegan, this whole heart attack thing has us riding my dad pretty hard about his overall diet. He doesn't eat meat of any sort, just seafood. Which is good, except that he fries about 75% of the time.

Anyway, if you've come up with any "healthy" filipino seafood recipes, I'm all ears (eyes?).
