The breeze carries the ocean air up to where Mel is and she takes a deep breath of it. She gazes up at the sky and pulls out the sword she carries, and once again she takes a deep breath ( Read more... )

As she approaches North Beach, one of Triv's favorite spots, Mel can see Triv appear, dressed in her sparring gear and with a set of practice swords slung over her back. She's been working out, and is in a pretty good mood.

"Given that there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with his sense of self-preservation, I'm sure he would." Triv winked - she's just joking around, after all. She wouldn't go after Gibbs without a good reason

It's highly unlikely that he ever would. "What have you been getting up to? Since that scuffle a little while back, I haven't really seen you much."

((Oooh, I think I've seen that one. Also, during the Dark!Plot, I said that the reason she didn't notice that Gibbs was gone instantly was because she was helping Triv on some world or something. I figure they've known each other so long and stuff, Triv would let Mel help with minor things now?))

"Just the usual. New world to explore, it's got a highly developed civilization that's oriented around literary magic. I've been focusing on getting its theological works translated and recorded. M'Lady Athena's always interested in other deities and pantheons."

((Yeah, I'd say so - Mel's been training long enough to be seriously good in a fight, and the best way to test how good is to put her into real situations while she's there to supervise.))

"Interesting. Literary magic? And what kind of world is it? Like, earth-like, or more like a single biome?"

((Okay, cool. Glad it works with you. *hug*))

"Yeah - have you ever heard the phrase that the difference between the right word and the almost-right word is like the difference between lightning and a lightning bug? With these people, when you hit those 'right words', Things Happen. Poetry isn't just an art form there, it's a way of life.

Ecologically it's Earthlike, but there's some fundamental differences between the laws of nature there, obviously, and the technology is radically different from what we know. Things like electricity being powered by poems about thunderstorms, buildings being erected by choral chanting - it's fascinating."

Mel seems fascinated. "My friend Courtney would love to visit there... It sounds amazing. Do people do things on accident, or is it down to where nothing bad happens?"

"It has to be backed up by intent, and the more powerful effects require writing in a particular form - things would be absolute chaos, otherwise. I suspect that sometimes kids will have accidents while they're learning, but there are ways to block things, and the kids are taught the blocked forms until they're considered old enough to handle them unblocked."
