Jan 13, 2006 09:15

Given a quote and a time period, name the famous philosopher.

  1. Two acceptable answers: Socrates, who allegedly spoke those words in the first place but never wrote anything down, and Plato, who allegedly wrote down the words attributed to Socrates and who rarely in his works wrote anything as if it was he himself saying it. Since no one can really be sure whether Plato was presenting us with the "objective" Socrates or "Plato's" Socrates, quotes attributed to Socrates are generally acceptably attributed to Plato, as well.
  2. Boethius
  3. Rene Descartes (I figured this one would be too easy in English)
  4. Friedrich Nietzsche
  5. Saint Thomas Aquinas ("St. Thomas" is not acceptable, as there are several St. Thomases.)
