Just tell your mom... what's the worst that could happen? And take out the batteries. I don't know your family, obviously, but in mine, if we don't like it, we just say it (politely), and everyone understands. And if it hasn't been opened, we return it for something we like better. Since that thing is something you actually have to care for, etc, I don't see why your mom wouldn't understand.
