Bullety Listy Random Stuff. With Sneezing.

  • I joined the gym yesterday, and spent twenty painfully boring minutes on the thingy that's like running but isn't a treadmill. There's a word. I cannot think of it. But anyway, I did it, and I thought I was going to die. It wasn't at all that it was too physically difficult, but dear god, what is your brain supposed to do while you're slogging ( Read more... )

what is your brain supposed to do while you're slogging away for miles and miles and miles and hours and hours and hours on these machines?

Listening to my MP3 player and looking at hot guys hasn't gotten boring yet.

All I had available to look at yesterday was a sheet of plastic hanging from the ceiling. At least, that's all I could look at without being wildly obvious. Clearly I chose the wrong running-but-not-treadmill machine. Must remember that for today.

Good work with all that running! I don't know what people do, but audiobooks or courses on CD (www.theteachingcompany.com) sound like a good idea!

It's called an elliptical machine. :-)

What are your fitness goals?

I agree with audio books. Also, my gym has mini-televisions on some of the treadmills that you can plug your headphones into and watch whatever you choose. It's the only time I watch TV, so that works well for me. I've seen some people read magazines or the newspaper while on a stationary bike, but I have to think they're not getting a very strenuous workout if they are able to do that. Still, it's probably better than nothing!

That's the one! I had to ask yesterday while I was there. I don't mind the elliptical machine anywhere near as much as I expected to. It's certainly better than the treadmill.

My biggest goal is a strong, healthy body. The weight I'll lose in the process of building that strong, healthy body is a definite bonus, but what I want most is to live a long, productive, happy life, and that's far more likely if my body is healthy, you know?

Television would be fantabulous. I think there are some at my gym, but the elliptical machine I was on is not pointed toward one. I should look today to see if I can find one that is closer to a TV. I think the audiobook idea is going to be good for me, too. It's the next best thing to reading. :)

These televisions are even better than the big ones that are aimed at various spots in the gym. They're actually ON each treadmill! You get to choose the channel you want to watch and everything. It's great!

But if I didn't have that, I'd definitely use an audiobook. And if you don't want to buy a bunch of them, check out the ones you can borrow from Cracker Barrel restaurants. Or the library. :-)

You know, I really didn't have a difficult time at all the second time I quite smoking. The first time was torturous, and smoking was all I could think about. I started again just a few months later. The second time, though, I decided my las cigarette wuld be after my job interview. I interviewed, and then as I was walking to the bus stop I had that cigarette, and that was it. I think the difference was that I was ready to quit. I was doing it because I wanted to, not because someone nagged me or because my doctor lectured me or whatever. It was just time.

Do you have anything anything for recovering fattening-foods-aholic? Because I can't have any of those anymore, and I am not happy about it. After the gym yesterday I had the most bizzare cravings. I wanted a steak, on the rare side of medium rare; steamed broccoli and carrots, which I ordinarily do not like at all; Thanksgiving dinner; a grilled brie and wilted spinach sandwich; and ice cream. Not all at once, but spread out over the rest of the day. The food thing is ( ... )

What's wrong with steak? Why do you need to change your diet?

Nothing is wrong with steak. I eat way more red meat than is good for me, though, and I need to change that. My current diet is in no way healthy. I need to eat less of the unhealthy fast food that's become such a huge part of my diet and replace that with fruits and veggies, and find healthier alternatives to the high-fat snacky stuff that I eat now.
