Oh. My. GOD. I am so busy at work. It's a really good kind of busy, though. My days are spent doing things that I enjoy and the time absolutely flies by

Yes. Somebody did a poor job of proofreading it. That one issue was so crazy-making. In one paragraph she's the hierarch and in the next the heirarch, and then a few paragraphs later she's back to being the hierarch for a few more paragraphs. It goes on for about a chapter that way, and it is maddening. To me, anyway. Evidently not everyone *cough* The fontosaurus *cough* notices it.
I'm just reading Ghost Brigades for the first time this week, and this issue is driving me up the wall. Really messed up a otherwise excellent candlelight bath. I assume Scalzi chose "heirarch" as a kind of pun on the Enesha's method of succession, then either succumbed to spellcheck or failed to notice that some nimrod proofreader had done a terrible job of "fixing" it.
Anyway, I did a search hoping to find some mention of it in his blog, and found this instead. At least I get the comfort of knowing that it drove someone else batshit crazy.
BTW, you've surely read Stephenson's Anathem by now, but in case you haven't and plan to: Make sure you have at least a little alcohol in your system once you get about halfway through. My husband and I use one of that book's character names as an interjection meaning, "I spy a giant continuity error!"
I haven't read it yet. I've heard it's great, but I've also heard it will make me want to be dead before I slog all the way through. If I do decide to give it a go, I'll be sure to stock up on cider first! :)

Start that chili! I want to hear how it goes! :)
So, you're saying this book switches the spelling back and forth? Like it's a typo? Eek.
