This is roughly in place. I'm missing the scenes in Metropolis and Smallville when they first get together, but the trigger to this incident is the threat in "The Truth". Spike once said, after Dru dumped him (they'd been together over 100 years) that she didn't even have the respect to kill him rather than send him away.
