Splendid idea, reading Jerome and then Willis.

They go together so nicely, too... not just the titles & literary references, but the atmosphere and humour. Also, I've had the Willis book kicking around for ages, and finding Three Men in a Boat in Oxfam kick-started me into reading them both. Otherwise it'd probably still be sitting there o__O

Have you read any other Willis? I like her, generally, but some of her short stories can be terribly sad.

Being interested in cycling, I was pleased to find, a book by Jerome called Three Men on The Bummel in which the "heroes" of TMiaB embark on a cycling trip. Not a patch on their watery adventures, alas.

Aw, TMotB sounds so promising.

No I haven't read anything else by Willis, this was my first taste. I'm quite interested to try a short story now, though, just for comparison.

I love that you described Willis's plot as having good bone structure!

And well-turned calves!

Had to edit to add - I just read a friend's review on Goodreads and she describes it as 'A love letter to the Victorian era'. I think that's the best description of this book I've read.

I like Connie Willis - try her novel "Doomsday Book" (I really liked this one too - not quite as amusing as "To Say Nothing About the Dog" but still good). I've also read "Passage" which is a completely different turn - not times travel but travel of another sort (still ambivalent about this one but it was an interesting read). I've never read any of her short stories. I need to re-read these books (it's been about 8-10 years since I read them).

i've been wanting to come back and re-read your review of To Say Nothing of the Dog now that i've read it myself. pootles about in boats ... good bone structure and tucked in ends ... what marvelous turns of phrase. and, as usual, you've summed the whole thing up beautifully without a single spoiler.

i've just been on the web site for my public library and Three Men in a Boat is on the shelves. i'll be picking it up on my next visit.
