Only five books read in January. It's some sort of negative record, but let's blame Dickens because he's a) dead and b) responsible for the my spending the first three weeks of 2011 squinching my eyes in stubborn determination. It seems that for the first and probably only time, I've read more books in a month that you have :-)

But at least your five books were five good ones, which is what matters really, I think.

I shall have to look for the Holmes one - I'm always a bit leery of other people writing Holmes, but from your write-up it sounds like this is a good 'un.

Glad you enjoyed Nicholas Nickleby - I was drawn into reading it by seeing the Cghannel Four production with Roger Rees as Nicholas and David Threlfall as Smike. Brilliant.

And complete agreement on Triffids.Wyndham was a genius IMO.

Edward Petherbridge as Newman Noggs as well. And Alan Wossname as Wackford Squeers.

Oh I'm sure you will :-)

Especially as I've just started a pretty long book - Fingersmith by Sarah Waters, which I'm loving so far - it has a really Dickensian feel about it and is one of those books that pulls the reader in right away.

There are a few copies from the marketplace sellers, but not directly from Amazon. I will have to give it some thought, since technically it's book-related and I'm trying to limit my spending.

I enjoyed Fingersmith immensely. Clever and twisty, and I agree about the Dickensian atmosphere. I've not read anything else by Sarah Waters, because they've had mixed reviews, though I do keep meaning to try something else.
