I envy Elly her normal life, the husband and daughters and remaining friends who now grieve for her. I envy her this mahogany coffin. This sentiment seems to be all over this prompt. Are we, as writers, more prone to thinking these kinds of things through (and thus realizing that eternal life is a terrible idea), or are do we have such a bad idea of what the rest of society wants? Do they actually desire eternal life, or do we imagine that because we believe we are somehow different, maybe better, than the rest?
Actually, it is a very interesting, and introspective, comment. My own approach to the prompt was that eternal life, at least as it would occur here on earth, leaves one's soul "stuck," and weary. I personally believe we journey through many lives as we try to attain complete spiritual development, and one particular life that goes on forever would interrupt this process.
