Everywhere I turn, people are trying to spoil The Avengers for me by telling me what to think of it. I don't want to know! So I'm going radio silent until this evening. I hope I make it to 8:30.

Most of the time, I like knowing what people thought going into a movie. I like to have a general feel about the thing and what to expect so I can modulate

I too have noticed a lot of spoilers floating about. Particularly from international posters who are taking vengeance on us for all the times they have to wait for a film to be released.

There's not so much spoilers that I've seen. I've been pretty good at steering clear and been extremely lucky. But the "This is what I thought!" with no spoiler warning posts are getting reeeeally irritating. Usually, it doesn't bother me, so I realize I'm being a little more sensitive than usual. This level of sensitization clearly doesn't agree with me. I need it to be three hours later already...

That level of paranoia about spoilers for a fandom usually immediately precedes me breaking up with it. Cause then watching the show is less about watching the show than waiting tensely for it to hurt me. See X-Files, Supernatural.

But--so excited about tonight! Unlike with me, where I've only gotten this way about episodic television, there's little chance you'll get this worked up and it will be filler. :)

Part of my excitement, of course, has nothing to do with the movie itself. There was a large part of my childhood where superheroes were awesome. Not even necessarily the Avengers, just superheroes. And I had cartoons, which were awesome, and comic books, which, ditto. But they're marginal, and in some way you always understand that they're not what "real" people read/participate in. Making a movie where superheroes are played by flesh and blood actors is a big deal. Seeing animated Avengers is pretty fun, but there's something about making the fantasy that much more real--that much more a part of the "real" world--that is enough to make one insane.

I mean, there's a part in the trailer where the Avengers are all standing around together and I diiiiiiiiied. Funnily enough, I didn't get that way about the X-Men movies as much because they were always a team property. The idea that you can bring together heroes who are all pretty goddamned awesome in their own movies (except possibly the Hulk, poor brute) and make a movie of all them

I have a random table I roll on to tell me what to think about movies before I seem them.

For The Avengers, it's piquant and nostalgic, with citrus notes, vaguely reminiscent of Marcel Duchamp's early, funny works.

I've been resisting the urge to post anything about it for similar reasons, don't want to taint people's perceptions (in spite of the minor discussion we had about sending you fake spoilers).

I admire your restraint. Normally, I'm not so much at odds with people saying "I have a review!" BUT it was The Avengers. You'll be happy to know that I was teased mightily by folks showing up to the movie about this radicalism.

I loved it, btw.

Awesome. That's how in general. I don't really like having expectations and I may be easier to please than most when it comes to movies, but whatever. One of my best friends really irritates me because he lives on message boards (and gets paid for it -- he's a computer tech with a lot of downtime) and reads all about every film that comes out. Then he loves to jump on the bashing bandwagon before even seeing it if there are negative reviews. He's one of those who like participating in pissing contests for best/most humorous reviews whether he's seen it or not. Aaaanyway, I've been wondering what your take on The Avengers would be and I look forward to reading about it.

And I still gotta see Cabin In The Woods.
