You're not alone--I also like these films! So I will definitely be seeing this one.
The reason I keep giving money to this franchise is not really for any WOW ZOMBIES factor (I can get that with other films) but just for the fact that it's one of the few action franchises that feature a female lead that doesn't annoy the shit out of me. And there's always some sort of girl BFF awesomeness going on too so that's a plus.
I saw the first one without having played the games, so I wasn't biased by the film's lack of adherence to the source material. Having then played 1 and 2, I have to say that I don't really object to the changes. If you're going to make a zombie movie these days, you don't hurt your chances of striking a good chord by turning it into an action movie.
The female-led franchise points are just bonuses. I actually really like Mila Jovavich's character and the fact that she kicks ass. She and Michelle Rodriguez were the only ones I could remember in the first one. (There was "Mr. Greenpeace" and "Euro-trash Hugh Jackman," but, you'll note, I don't know their names or their characters' names.) In the second one, you added Jill Valentine, who was SMOKING HOT and also walked into the police station and shot fucking zombies in the head and walked on. Love you!
But the third one killed the fun. It was nonsensical, cliched, boring, and the action was an afterthought to the Mila Army. Okay, okay, Mila Army = THE WIN, but still. Now that we get
( ... )
God, I remember NOTHING about the third film except that Mila wore an awesome coat, and that ending with the Mila army. And that it took place in Vegas (overrated town, even in the apocalypse).
The second film I think did the most nods to the actual game; Jill's outfit for one, and the Nemesis. Plus there was this one scene that was lifted directly from Code Veronica. This one looks like it might actually have a lot of nods to the game as well, with the monsters and Jill and Chris showing up.
I wish I could go back to the games and play them, but I have this horrible bias now. It used to be I could play older games, but now that such better looking new games are out? Unless I've already played said older games, the graphics bother me such that I can't pick up old games I haven't played. Woe.
Verily, thou art a silly person. :) I'm not sure I could justify paying money to see this. The only reason we justified the second one was we were in Vegas and felt like seeing a movie. But if you're willing to wait a little bit, we could MovieNite it. :)
Oh no, this is a definite "go to the theater plastered, laugh at screen" movie night outing. I have to. At this point, there's no reason not to go to the theater. I've seen all the rest of them there!
The first one is awesome (I own it!) and the second one was really good (missed it on DVD, and now they only have it in movie packs, I think). I was deeply disappointed and annoyed by the third, so I was similarly conflicted by the trailer for the new movie. But I'll go see it! I suppose it's only in 3-D?
I think it'll be MOSTLY in 3D. From what they've been advertising, I think the non-3D will be almost more annoying than the 3D. As in, it looks like there's plenty of it's-coming-out-of-the-screen shots that, unless you see it in 3D, will just look like old TV reruns of Jaws 3D (i.e. BAD) without 3D. I'm willing to suck it up and just see it in 3D. They claim they shot it with the Avatar system, so maybe it'll be better than most 3D?
