Oh man. I have a friend with the last name Nguyen. I feel like an idiot for pronouncing in "en-GUY-en" because that's how she used to do it. What I realized later, and she laughed at me about, was that she was saying it that way to the guy who took IDs at our dorm. (Because she went to our sister-school, she had to be signed in and turn over an ID upon entry.) That way when she said her last name, he'd know to look at the Ns. Say "Nwee-yen" and they gave you a blank look.

Mao, though. Jesus. Half this country is using stupid communist BS against the president, but I'd bet they'd mispronounce Mao, too.
