Puppy!

Great White Shark am not serial killer; me am puppy!I object to this salacious headline for three reasons. One, this isn't exactly news. You have some hundreds of millions of years in which sharks have evolved to be perfect predators. If they survived on randomly chomping at prey, they would never have made it this long. And speaking of evolution, ( Read more... )

kitties, news

Agreed.

So which animals are the neocons of the ocean? :)

Don't look at me. I'm still trying to figure out who was what neocon from that article you linked to yesterday.

Also, no! Bad! No humanizing animals!

Yeah, I read the bit about how sharks hang back and watch their victims, picking off young and isolated individuals, and thought hey, that sounds just like pretty much any other predator.

Yeah, it's hard to see why this is a surprise since every book about sharks I've ever read (and I've read most of them) makes it a point to state that sharks are all about picking off the easy prey because easy prey that you have to stalk and kill is still easier than trying to randomly attack anything that moves. And double yeah, that's a predator's MO. They have to conserve energy because they're at the bottom of the energy period, food-wise.

They eat liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti?

Actually, the fatty liver is the organ of most sustenance to a shark. It's why they feed off of seals and other large fish and only ever tend to bite other creatures--they need the fat.

You swam with sharks? Like, literally?

Whoa.

And really, the article doesn't need to liken sharks to a fucking fictional character to prove that they're scary. Everyone knows they're scary already.

Technically, I've swum with sharks more than once--as in, I've gone diving and been in not-far vicinity with sharks. But the swimming I did in particular was a birthday gift from my brother. It was a snorkeling in a cage with sharks swimming all around. I loved every minute. Well, except for the part where the water was so choppy that I vomited into the water...

Sharks aren't scary! They're smiley puppies! (I am a little crazy about sharks.)

Wow. That sound amazing and terrifying all at once!

(I am a little crazy about sharks.)

Which again, is amazing and terrifying! (I may have watched Jaws one too many times...)
