Summary: A look back on a young love.
“Happy Valentine’s Day!” Seven year old Kurenai Mio said eyes bright and wide and a big smile on her face as she thrust a small black and silver package towards her classmate, Fujimori Tatsuya. “These are for you!”
“You got me chocolate, Mio-chan?” Tatsuya sniffed the package warily, pleased when the aroma of rich chocolate hit his nostrils. “Does that mean you like me?”
“Of course it means I like you, silly.” Mio giggled. “You’re the only person besides Papa who even bothers to want to listen to me play violin. Maya never does… even though she’s my sister.”
“That’s because I like your playing. I could listen to it all day.” And it was true, of course. Tatsuya was just that fond of her violin skills and of Mio herself… even though he was just seven years old. He smiled at the package and then at Mio and then he gave her a little hug. They weren’t at school, so it was okay. He wouldn’t have to worry about Mio’s twin sister Maya making remarks about them. “Thank you, Mio-chan!”
The memory faded away as seventeen year old Kurenai Mio drew the last long note on her violin. It was almost White Day and she hadn’t seen or heard much from Tatsuya lately. She hoped they hadn’t forgotten their yearly ritual: give one another chocolate or whatnot for Valentine’s Day and White Day every year until one of them found a significant other.
She also hoped that this wasn’t the year he found a significant other, because she felt she already had one: Tatsuya himself. They’d been childhood friends and Mio had hoped they were taking those steps towards becoming a couple, but she also knew that if Tatsuya had found a suitable mate, even at his young age, she stood no chance. She knew how the bounds between Wolfen and their mates worked, having seen them in action with her older brother, Masao and his wife, Akane, Tatusya’s older sister, and with her older sister, Misako and her husband, Mitsuhide, Tatsuya’s older brother. She knew full well once Wolfen mated, it was for life… even transcending death.
The thought depressed her. She had hoped, even at her young age, when she had first learned she was in love with him, that she would be the one chosen for him.
But fate was a tricky thing and time, even trickier and much crueler as the legacy of her bloodline and power had proven. Her grandfather, Kurenai Otoya, had met her grandmother, Maya, the Fallen Queen, and in Maya, had found his fated woman, only for fate to rip him from her and from the mortal coil. Her father’s lover, Queen Mio had been forced to choose between Kiva, King and Bishop had died for her mistake. Another Queen, Sakomi, the illegitimate daughter of Queen Mio and Bishop had found her true love in a Wolfen, Satoru, the eldest Fujimori, only for a case of mistaken identity and cruel fate to also tear him from her. Fate had been kind enough to give him back, but Mio knew that the fates were not always so kind…especially to Queens. Even her older sister, the next in line to become Queen, Misako, was not immune. Misako had suffered a series of heartbreaks and abandonments before fate had given her Mitsuhide, who had vowed to never leave her.
Mio picked up her bow and violin and began to play a sadder song, something she had found scribbled on old sheet music in the trunks that held her grandfather, Otoya’s things. It reminded her of the image of her grandmother that Masao had once drawn and how sad and lost the Fallen Queen had looked. The mental image pulled at her heart and suddenly, Mio found she could no longer play, wondering if she was doomed to the fate of a Queen: a loveless marriage to a King who did not love her, death or losing her true love to either death or the cruel torment of fate.
The thought was enough to break her heart and she tried even harder to lose herself in the music, only for a voice to break her out of it.
“Mio-chan?”
It was Tatsuya. He was standing at the entrance to the music room, a package in violet in one hand and a hopeful smile on his face.
“Oh!” She wiped her eyes quickly. “Tatsuya-kun! What are you doing here?”
“It’s White Day, remember?” He cocked his head and looked at her funny before indicating the package in his hand. “Our tradition.”
“Oh, I thought you forgot.” Mio said. “I mean, you hadn’t said anything to me about it in a few days or spoken to me at all, for that matter…I figured that you’d finally found, you know… your mate or something…” She was trying very hard to hide the fact she’d been crying.
“Why would I need to find my mate when she’s been right in front of me all along?” Tatsuya asked, coming to Mio and gently kissing the tears away. “Why would I need to find anyone else… when I’ve always had you?” He chuckled and placed the bag on the side table before pulling the surprised violinist into an embrace.
He smiled and then murmured something into her ear that made her heart soar.
“P.S: I love you, Kurenai Mio.”
