"I didn't know you sang, Wataru." Taiga observed as he came into the music room in Castle Doran and found Wataru tapping away on their grand piano, singing a song he had been working on. "Your voice is lovely."
"Mother taught me to sing when I was little." Wataru murmured. "Bishop asked me to help make you something for your birthday, as apparently, the King's birthday is a big deal. "
"A song for my birthday, hmmmm?" Taiga came right up behind Wataru, his hand trailing up Wataru's back, his breath in his ear. "Can I hear it? The song?"
"Well, it's not quite perfect..."
"It's from you. It's already perfect."
Wataru chuckled. "Here. You can sing it with me." He handed Taiga some sheet music with lyrics on it and smiled. "Follow my lead, listen..."
Wataru began to tap on his piano and began to sing, Taiga's voice joining in,:
"Sono te ni ukabi agaru monshou ga akashi
yami no iro wo atsume matou OORA no you ni
Roots of the king, Roots of the king, Roots of the King..."
Taiga smiled and joined in "...Roots of the King..."
"I didn't know you sang." Wataru teased.
"So far I like this song."
Wataru chuckled and continued to sing:
"Mamoreru beki mono wa shuzoku no okite
somuku tsumi wa shunkan sabakarete,
sekai wo horobosu to iu chikara no tame
arawareta junketsu no keishousha..."
Taiga chose that moment to join in, their voices blending together in perfect harmony.
"Judge it, King! tsumugarete kita unmei no Saga
sono ude ni yudanerareta
kiba wo muita mono wa eien ni naraku wo samyou
What’s real? attouteki na
shihai wo ima oozora ni shikaketekuru
yuruginai sonzai Roots of the king…"
As they sang, Taiga came to sit beside him on the piano bench, their voices blending together, and their eyes occasionally meeting. The way they sounded together made Taiga smile to himself.
Before Wataru had a chance to open his mouth, Taiga began to sing.
"Sono ishi ni tsuwaru no wa tada hitori dake
magaimono wa munashiku kiete yuku dake
Roots of the King, Roots of the King, Roots of the King..."
Wataru then joined in with him. "...Roots of the King."
As they sang, their eyes met, their heads, pressed close together.
"We sound good together." Taiga murmured with a smile.
"That we do." Wataru replied, his breath hitching in his chest. He wanted to keep singing, but then, he watched as Taiga brushed some hair out from Wataru's warm brown eyes.
"I guess I spoiled the surprise for my birthday, although, if you'd like, I'll still act surprised when you perform the song."
"Oh, that's okay..." Wataru was struggling to remember to breathe and he then turned back, tapping on the piano again, only stopping when Taiga's hands landed on top on his.
"Wataru..." Taiga murmured.
"Let's finish the song." He was trying very hard not to do what he wanted to do, which was throwTaiga on the piano and start tearing clothes off.
"We can finish it later." Taiga told him, his voice warm and amorous. The sound of their voices had set something off and he pulled Wataru to his feet. "Bring the sheet music. Perhaps you can finish the song after we're finished."
In bed, their intimacy only seemed to be heightened by the sound o f them singing to one another, their voices as entweined as their young bodies.
"It's a nice song." Taiga commented as he drew Wataru close to him, his lips warm on his forehead. "I think I will enjoy hearing you sing it to me on my birthday."
"Perhaps we could duet." Wataru teased.
"Yes..." Taiga kissed Wataru then and their bodies seemed to almost meld with that kiss and they curled together, content to just be.
Just before they fell asleep, Wataru exhaled and breathed, "Happy birthday, Taiga."
