Oh, and even in the 1950s, there was a long tradition of women working to put their husbands through grad/med/law school. They rarely got to do work they loved while doing it, but I have many profs whose wives worked as secretaries/typists/typesetters while they took their degrees.
I hope the garden is enjoying its tending!
