Its been a stressful week with the junco babies. earlier on I had to water the planter they live in which I try to do very carefully so as not to disturb but it spooked them and all three spilled out onto the grass. (If I don't water the plant it wilts and the birds are exposed and around here, crows rule the sky and eat little critters. So, as I ( Read more... )

Wow, sorry it became stressful w. the birds. Nature can certainly be cruel. I hope w. the babies popping out of the nest like they'd been doing that they did take flight.

A few days ago my nephew had a family of skunks die at the entrance to their driveway. Mama Skunk was hit and killed by a car and she had several babies. They had to leave for work and by the end of the day the babies were missing or dead. Coyotes or hit by cars as well. Nephew found two babies mangled. Awful skunk smell and blood galore and the kids were in the car looking out the windows. I was traumatized just hearing about it but the kids seem to be ok. They live on a big farm and nature being brutal is too common an occurance. They've had a bad history w. keeping dogs alive too, either they come up missing or hit by cars despite having a fence. Nephew said they sadly can pick a fence jumper out of any litter.

Recently, we had a nest of baby birds (flycatchers, maybe?) right under the little roof that's over the front door. As the babies got bigger, I was alarmed that it looked like the nest was wayyyyy too small to hold them AND the cats started hanging out on the welcome mat, no doubt waiting for one to fall . . . . I checked them several times a day, and then, they were all gone! Not one or two, all five. Just like that. I have chosen to believe they all flew away . . . . .

Several bad experiences over the years have taught me to also just 'let nature take it's course' and to not interfere.
Has made me ponder the significance of 'saving' any member of any species over the years.
Humans, being the 'thinking' mammals that we are, have a pretty heavy job doled out to them...
