This is Prim's element. She's not particularly strong or adventurous, and a lot of the time she doesn't feel very brave-- but she is a healer. She follows her mother's orders without a word, knowing each remedy called for by name and sight. Back at the whipping post, she would have felt weak and useless, but here... here, at least, she can be of help to the people that she loves.

Candy felt useless. Watching the scene from her world and how Katniss had stood up for Gale. But that didn't really matter in the end. What mattered was that Gale needed her, and she couldn't leave him there like that. Even if he had all of them to support him, she felt she just had to be at his side as well ( ... )

Hazelle arrives soon after though, throwing Candy a suspicious glance, but it's her son she's more worried about right now so she lets it pass. She hurries over to the table where he's being treated and breathlessly sits on a stool beside it, taking Gale's hand and pressing it to her lips, saying nothing.

Of course, Gale was oblivious to everything going on around him at the time. He had no idea he had been moved or was being treated and he had no idea that Candy had joined them, that Katniss had already vaguely introduced her to everyone present.

Finally though, there was some glimmer of hope that he was still alive in there. A slight stirring as the final bandages were placed, as if he was trying to wake up. A low moan when his brain registered there was something very very wrong and the pain began to overwhelm him.

Katniss tried not to let her emotions get the best of her in this current moment, at least her emotions regarding Candy and Gale. It was one thing to hear about it. It was another to actually see the way Candy doted on him...

All of that was washed away, though, as Gale began to stir. It had been her hope that he'd stay unconscious. Her cheek burned with the pain of the where the whip had struck, and that was one lash in one isolated area. He had several across his entire back. She knew the pain would be unbearable once he came around.

"Do we have anything for him?!" Katniss demanded, finding it hard to keep the anger from her voice.
