I was in contact with a man named Mark Donell who formatted his emails exactly the same as the one sent to you. I thought it was shady, so I've ended contact with him. Do I have anything to worry about since he has my personal information?

Any place in your new company for an out of work English teacher? I nearly got suckered by this guy and it breaks my heart because my family really needed this income ( ... )

I'm glad you didn't lose any money on this. Have you gotten the check yet? Does it look like a normal one?

Did they mention paying them the excess money through Western Union?

I'm sorry to hear about your difficult economic situation. But I'm in the San Jose, CA area. Too far from you.

I assume you already look on Craigslist for tutoring company jobs. There are online tutoring companies too.

Teaching English tri_blog September 9 2008, 19:02:40 UTC
Try targeting rich Asian or other immigrants and their kids.

Also, do you teach anything else? I'm a jack-of-all trades. I teach "everything"---physics, chemistry, biology, math, English, SAT I, and SAT II.

same thing happened to me two days ago. if this is a one man show, i think is is trying to make it look better, because, like someone stated above, western union was not mentioned. Just a money gram to someone named Marva McGibbon. I googled her name last night and came across someone elses blog and he too was nearly screwed over by this guy. he posed as a father from Denmark and his son James is 7 years old. His email was joesmith....something at yahoo. he has just been persistant on me telling him when the money gram has gone through. i took the check to the bank yesterday and they verified through Chase (which was the bank printed on the check)that the account does not exist and the meter numbers on the bottom were fake. Real checks have magnetic ink. SO my husband and i we able to figure it out before the check was cashed and all is fine (I hope). But we are reporting it. I just hope other see this before they go all the way and end up oweing their bank money.

Please tell the police and bring them any evidence! tri_blog September 8 2008, 21:57:27 UTC
Wow, it's horrible that so many people are being affected by this scam.

Please bring any checks or other evidence to the police. Definitely report it. Let's stop this asshole.

I also almost fell for this. Well I received the check but never cashed it. Just got it today. Should I be worried that he has my personal information also?

It depends what info you gave him. I'd keep the check as evidence. Don't cash or touch it further. Maybe you could bring it to the police and make a report?

They just tried to get me too! anonymous September 10 2008, 14:41:38 UTC
I received a similar response from a "lawyer in sweden" who would have to send his son overseas for 12 lessons? As soon as I read his message I knew it had to be a scam so I googled tutoring scams and found this thread! Thank God! I also sent him a resume, but he seemed to ignore everything in it and ask for the info again....I didn't include anything too sensitive in the resume so I think I'll be fine. Thanks for getting this out there! Much love,

Harel

I just got one of these from "mark collins" today. If it wasn't for the fact that I have been in email contact with "anthony" who has a similar situation/scam, I wouldn't have realized as quickly.

One thing that's helpful:
As a LOT of questions.
