... was being asked "Is that Mrs or Miss?" by a sales assistant who should have known better, as they were clearly a trans woman.

Why not just ask, "Your title?"

I get so annoyed by things like this, and like being asked for my e-mail address so they can send me a receipt - WTF? - that I am beginning to bore myself.

I know! I wish I could remember to say, "Comrade" or "Citizen".
