“I’m not hating on Raymond Carver. I’m hating on you reading Raymond Carver first thing in the morning like that’s normal.” It’s not just Raymond Carver. It’s some new thing every day: The Penal Colony in makeup, Wallace Stevens while they break on set, The Sun Also Rises over falafel and tzatziki while they wait for Cho to get off the phone with his wife. He’s pretty sure he’s even seen Chris taking One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest into the bathroom.

“It’s not first thing,” Chris is saying. “I told you, I did the crossword. Incidentally, big talk from the guy who brought Nicomachean Ethics to makeup.”

“That was different.”

“In what possible way?”

A lot of ways. For one thing, Zach isn’t some blue-eyed polo-team-looking golden boy whose brain melts every time a pretty girl uncrosses her legs within a ten-foot radius, not that that should make a difference, but it does. For another thing Zach doesn’t want to live inside Nicomachean Ethics. Sure, he can get behind the idea, happiness being a life of purposeful virtue, great in theory

“Okay,” Chris says finally. “Got it. Although I’d like to note that this entire story is a passage that sings, and it’s fucking sacrilegious to make me pick something. You buckled up, bitch? Need a synopsis

“ ‘Close your eyes now,’ the blind man said to me.” Chris has that low hoarse softness in his voice, the rasp of morning, and he’s barely modulating, as if he doesn’t even want to hear himself speak, doesn’t to hear anything except the words. “I did it. I closed them just like he said.

“ ‘Are they closed?’ he said. ‘Don’t fudge.’

“ ‘They’re closed,’ I said.

“ ‘Keep them that way,’ he said. He said, ‘Don’t stop now. Draw.’ ”

Chris coughs and glances sideways at him. Zach doesn’t say anything.

“So we kept on with it. His fingers rode my fingers as my hand went over the paper. It was like nothing else in my life up to now.

“Then he said, ‘I think that’s it. I think you got it,’ he said. ‘Take a look. What do you think?’

“But I had my eyes closed. I thought I’d keep them that way for a little longer. I thought it was something I ought to do.”

Zach realizes that Chris isn’t looking at the open book before him. His half-lidded eyes are on something out the window: he knows the passage by heart.

“ ‘Well?” he said. ‘Are you looking?’

This story, Zach realizes sort of insanely, is Chris’s girlfriend, and now he has to introduce her to his social circle and he’s worried that it’s going to be weird.

I'm going to borrow an oldie but a goodie here:

4. Moleskine of English-major sadness. Because it is so true. Chris still has all the ones he wrote in when he was an English major at home somewhere. Archived by year.
5. The whole idea of Chris reading one of his favorite passages aloud to Zach. True (and embarrassing) story: I once read an entire passage from Martin Amis's London Fields (and from which I got my username) to a boy I liked. Which is to say, yeah, Chris is totally in love with Zach.
