THIS IS HOW YOU LOSE HER
Junot Diaz
I couldn't sleep (looming deadlines, existential dread, insomnia) so I reached over and this lay just within reach. A few hours and several heartbreaking and humorous stories later, I was finished.
The protagonist of most of these stories is the same Yunior who featured in The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, though at varying ages and while the stories all center on love and different aspects of it filtered through the paternalism and misogyny and odd vulnerability of young immigrant Dominican males, the course this collection charted through the vast emotional swathes of the immigrant experience was what I found truly astounding.
Favorites include "Otravida, Otravez", "Invierno," and "The Cheater's Guide to Love" all for reasons I didn't always expect.
