Over and over again, his mother reassures him that he will find a match, but the words seem to mean nothing and he spends day after day wandering alone, afraid.

What if no one likes him? What if there is no connection? It's never happened before, his oldest brother tells him, there's nothing to be concerned about. There is someone for everyone, each one of them, all eagerly awaiting this day from the moment they took their first steps.

But in the night the world looks fearful and too large, and he lies awake wondering until the sun comes up.

Weeks pass. He plays with his friends and his siblings and eats the meals his mother gathers for them, but still the nagging doubt is like a dark cloud over him he is unable to clear away.

When the day finally comes, he has not slept a wink the night before. Sleepy and shaky, he lands on the veranda as the monks approach, his mother gently guiding the steps of each of her children, hiding well her sadness of seeing them go.

There are many children: fat ones, skinny ones, eager ones, shy ones. Which one will be his?

He is finishing the question in his mind when the boy comes towards him with an apple, shiny and red in his open hand. He has inquisitive storm-colored eyes and a welcoming smile.

Appa takes the apple. Aang grins at him, for just a moment, before burying his head into thick, soft fur.

"Hey, buddy," he whispers, and suddenly Appa is aware of his mother's rumbling chuckle. This boy will be his friend. This will be his best friend. They will take care of each other.

He is sure now, as Aang clings to him happily, that all his worrying was for nothing.
