I was surprised at the number of students in France when I was there who barely spoke a lick of French and got by just fine somehow. And in my experience, 'un petit peu' means they have a better grasp on English than I have on French because they only started learning English when there were 10 as opposed to 5 or something.

I mean, I totally speak French. Most Americans would consider me fluent. But I want all Americans who teach French to consider me fluent. And French people to consider me fluent. Not just acceptable or good or what have you. I want to see that category "near-native fluency" and be SURE that is me. I want to hear that interview question and not just understand it without a problem, but also to answer it fluidly.
Le sigh... or rather... le soupire.
