Repairing an Umbrella

I repaired my umbrella today, and learned a bit about how it is constructed in the process. The fabric of the umbrella is tied to the ends of the skeletal spokes that give it structure, and one (and then two, perhaps from the added stress caused by the first) of these ties had broken. I took home my friend's broken umbrella once (similarly thinking I could repair it) but several of the spokes had broken off of the pole, so it was pretty much a goner.
