I posted a series of articles at my Michigan Firearms Examiner column on "Tips and tricks" for the M-1 Garand. I had to break it up into three parts due to article size limits over at Ex.

That is a weapon I've always wanted to fire. I've fired a mini-14 and the recoil was pretty hard on my shoulder after a bit. Is the M-1 comperable?

The Mini-14 is a 5.56, same as the M-16 or M-4.

The M-1 Garand is .30 - '06. It typically has a 150 to 170 gr projectile instead of the 55 to 77 gr projectile of the 5.56.

You'll feel the recoil more from a Garand then a M-14, definitely. The gas operation helps a bit, so it's not as bad as say a Springfield 1903 bolt-action.
