Much read and reread Will’s letter, hoping against hope he’d somehow been mistaken - his reading was still a recent skill after all.
A boy! And they’d named him Allan! Much had smiled at that - feeling slightly jealous but also great joy for his friends in their happiness.
But it wasn’t happiness; it was Will’s sorrow which filled the rest of the page.
Saffiyah seemed well but the bleeding would not stop and even the best physicians in Acre could not help her. We lost her two days later.
