Allan's conflicted thoughts and feelings here were very well done. As much as he wants to think of himself as having moved on to something better, he can't help but still identify with the outlaws, despite his efforts to the contrary.
The part where Much made too many bowls of supper really got me. sniffle. It's those little things, the things you don't think about, that hurt the most when you lose someone close to you. I feel worst for Djaq, in a way, because she must be feeling so much guilt. But everyone's reactions were just perfect.
I'll be waiting for more.

Marian will be along shortly.
Allan likes to tell himself that he's doing what's right by him - I can't help but think he may have felt differently if it had been Will or Djaq who was caught tho'... or even Robin himself - but in a different different way.
The too many bowls thing struck me as something Much would just automatically do and while I think he probably always liked John a bit more than Allan, I don't think that's why he didn't make the same mistake when Allan left. I think, in spite of his size, it would be easier for him to forget John wasn't there because he was usually so quiet. The loss of Allan's presence would have been more noticeable since I'm sure the camp was a lot quieter once he'd gone.
Djaq is feeling pretty bad - and you'll be seeing more of her shortly too.

Really like Allan's reflections here, and the bit with the outlaws -- everyone's reactions are very in-character, and the writing is vivid and moving. Like the part with Guy too, but I wonder if he would feel that publicly slaughtering an outlaw like that was degrading to him in a way? Not because he'd feel that LJ deserved mercy or anything, but because it would be beneath his dignity to publicly execute an outlaw, particularly if that act was likened to the slaughter of cattle.

And sadly most people would think absolutely no less of him for taking an outlaw's life in that manner since they were "non-person"s anyway.
Oh, I agree -- I was thinking that Guy might consider it beneath him in the sense of "dirtying his hands" that way.
Can't wait to see Guy's confrontation with Marian. (Poor Marian -- I think that after Get Carter! she would have seen Little John as a kind of substitute father figure.)
Oh, and I'm glad you saw Guy's reluctance to kill the miner in Turk Flu -- I definitely saw it, but sometimes I wonder if I'm reading more goodness or at least ambivalence into Guy than is really there. LOL.

I really want to give some more intelligent feedback, but the emotions have captured me so thoroughly that that's all I've got.

Hopefully you'll feel better as the story progresses further.

It's fascinating how Allan can rationalize anything, but here, you also see that he knows that he's rationalizing, and how that makes him feel. Well done.
I thought the gang's reactions when they returned to camp were really nicely written too. I can imagine they're still in a state of shock, and it's going to be a while before they recover from this.
I look forward to reading the rest, as I'm sure the more gruesome bit is behind us now...

Thanks for the compliment on the Allan and gang parts. They're all a little stunned now and things will take time to sink in properly as you said.
Allan can justify anything to anybody it seems but I think he's all too aware when it's himself he's lying to...
Next part will be up soon.

This is still a WIP but it's mostly done and I figured starting posting it would be very good incentive for getting it finished.
Just out of curiosity - do you like to know how many parts something is going to be or do you like to not know and see how it progresses?

Personally, I like not knowing. I find I can get more absorbed in a story if I don't have the total number of chapters distracting me. :)
