Summary: Who watches the watchmen?
The lone guard standing by the postern gate was fidgeting nervously and continuously glancing furtively about.
Robin frowned as he studied him from twenty feet away. "They never have a guard there. That door's always barred from inside and impossible to open. Why have one there now?"
"Maybe the Sheriff is trying to sneak something in without anyone noticing?" Much suggested.
"Or out," John added.
"He definitely looks like he's waiting for something," Robin mused. "On the next turn of the guards on the battlements we'll sneak over, grab him, get his uniform and then I can wait there in his place. Agreed?"
Much and John nodded.
They all watched the guards on the battlements approach the tower over the gate, turn and head away from it again.
"Ready?" Robin hissed.
"Wait!" Much pointed to the back gate. "It's opening!"
The guard looked up and down the street then pushed the door from the outside. He gestured frantically to someone standing just out of sight.
"What is it, Master? Can you see?" Much craned his neck trying to look around Robin.
They all braced themselves for whatever might appear from within the gloomy interior of the castle.
What appeared was a young woman with a small bundle on her back and a huge smile on her face. She dropped the bundle as the guard lifted her up into his arms and kissed her passionately.
"Oh, Hilde..."
"Aelric," she giggled. "Put me down - we need to get away while there's still light enough to make Derby."
"You're still sure?" he asked.
She nodded and they joined hands and scurried off up the narrow street, laughing.
John chuckled. "I don't think the Sheriff had any part in that scheme."
"No," Robin agreed, with a broad smile. "Still - that's one less guard we need to worry about. If only we could make them all run away like that!" He took out his water flask and held it up. "Here's to Aelric and his girl. May they have long happy lives in Derby, or wherever, and have many fine children, none of whom grow up to be guards!"
Much and John joined him in his toast. "Hear, hear!" They all took a quick drink.
"So now what?" Much asked.
"I was just wondering..." Robin grinned.
"If anyone barred that door behind them?" John finished.
Robin nodded. "Only one way to find out..."
