This is bothering me: He saw in her eyes a kaleidoscope of astonishment, of wonder. "But how can you?" It was the second-most sincere thing she had ever said to him.

What is the first-most sincere thing she said to him? I feel like I should know, but I don't, and much as it would delight me to re-read all of the previous Allan/Nell stories just to try to figure this out, I simply haven't the time!

Thanks in advance for setting my mind at rest over this burning question! :)

I would say that at this point, Allan believes the most sincere thing Nell has ever said to him was her lie (which he does not yet know for a lie) about the Sheriff's Mark.
