you know, this is what was happening in the lit. theory world at the same time. embrace of the absurd, reconciling opposites in ironic and unsatisfying but interesting-for-thought and productive ways, etc. fun!

But the era I'm talking about is kind of pre-irony. There's nothing ironic or unsatisfying about the execution of films like Mannequin or Videodrome or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles -- or RoboCop. They just went for it, balls out. They didn't have to be ironic.

I think irony became a way of life in the mid-90s, maybe. And has threatened to destroy all culture ever since.
