Last night I saw The Darjeeling Ltd.

It was good enough that I have not completely written off Wes Anderson. I'd like to see it again, but I felt it had a lot more going on than A Life Aquatic and was about on par with The Royal Tanenbaums, but (slightly) less goofy and (slightly?) more personal ( Read more... )

I actually think I summed it up pretty well with, "They don't earn cult status anymore, they are born into it, and therefore it is difficult to objectively view or experience them." That's a better explanation of how I feel than I've been able to manage before.

The truth is, the man makes funny scenes but they're sterile. The ironically detached thing has gotten stretched so far that it's only about itself... Frankly, A Life Aquatic had two or three hilarious moments and good dialogue throughout, but it only works as a self-referential thing. It's a self-parody...

Darjeeling aspires to be more. Or that's how I felt when seeing it. I'd like to see it again, maybe when it goes to the Laurelhurst, before I really pass final judgment.
