WinRAR recovered everything. Zip Repair Pro FOUND everything and made lots of official-looking noises, but when the smoke settled I still wasn't able to open anything.

And Handy Recovery's evaluation version FOUND the archive: the backup I thought I had I did not actually have. Handy Recovery pulled the backup zip archive off the MAIN hard drive after four or five OS installs. It also was able to pull files I'd deleted on PURPOSE. I was impressed.

WinRAR and Handy Recovery: if you can do it all within 30 days, then these evaluation versions are AWESOME.
