Travel, a technology review

JF and I just spent three weeks driving to and around Newfoundland, camping, staying at bed and breakfasts and with friends. I found myself thinking, just like in the days of yore, about the process of travel, about the technology of travel and about the sheer joy of it ( Read more... )

Interesting, Trish. We carry electronics but don't try to make things talk to each other. I was very upset on two recent trips outside of Spain because Manolo and I discovered that our promised data roaming plan just wouldn't work. We had done all the right stuff but apparently not...and our company can't figure it out either.

We take laptops, tablets, phones. The biggest lesson I've learned is to carry all manner of correct chargers and adapter plugs. So far we've been fairly lucky but then we don't do wilderness camping.

Compared to your gadget-savviness, my gadgetry is rather primitive while travelling (especially in India, where travel connectivity and even power sources, are very patchy.) I take my laptop, and usually download pics and videos on my camera to it. I almost never take sound recordings (except on the video). But I have, even as it is, to take: Camera/charger. Phone/charger. Laptop/charger. In India, I also carry a large, unweildy multi-pin adapter so that even if I have only one power source, I can charge everything. I too like to share my travel experiences, but I generally do it only after I return from the trip.

My experience in India has been that there's an internet cafe on practically every corner, with plenty of plug-in capacity. But...you actually live there! JF has a small, elegant device that just about everything plugs into, multiple entry points. Not unwieldly at all ( ... )
