tummy troubles

Hello everyone out there on the interwebs I've got a question for you all. Lately my Crohns Disease has been giving me grief and I can't eat anything let alone enjoy it without paying for it in some way later. I'm tired of bread and butter or tortilla shells right out of the bag, and I adore snack cakes as much as the next person, but I've had ( Read more... )

poor college trash, too lazy to cook

My husband has Crohn's, and he goes straight for chocolate when he feels bad(he's in a flare up right now actually). It...well, doesn't quite help, haha, but it makes him feel comforted :P Either chocolate, cookies or things like Fudge Rounds or Cosmic Brownies. He likes to split two fudge rounds apart, then press the two cream-sides together to make a double one, haha

He likes to eat a lot of chicken/lettuce/tortilla wraps, or chicken & rice with a bit of onion powder(not too much or pain results), pepper and parsley flakes. Ummm...white pasta with cheese sauce or a tiiiny bit of red sauce (or gravy, or BBQ sauce!), frozen pizza, ramen, toasted bread with cheese on it...ginger ale with all of this as a placebo-comfort thing.
Oh yeah, duh, I forgot his all-around staple - club sandwiches! Chicken and turkey clubs, without tomato.

Oh, one of his favorite breakfasts is waffles with syrup and cinnamon sugar on top - sometimes chocolate chip waffles. When we have them, he puts M&M's in the squares of the waffle, haha.

...the way your husband eats sounds adorable. That's probably creepy coming from a person you don't know, but chocolate for comfort, double fudge rounds, and M&M waffles. thinking of a full grown man eating these things is kinda cute >.>

wow, this is exactly how i eat! (and i do swear up and down chocolate actually works!)

has he tried peppermint tea? anything pepperminty aids in digestion.

hmm, i might need to get some waffles...

If you have any ideas, I'd love to hear them. I don't have it myself, but I have a friend who does, and I'd love to cook for her sometime without having to get the menu approved in advance. I'd like to keep it as some surprise.

Heck, if you have anything less-than-trashy, I'd love to hear them, too.

fish and chicken are easier to digest than red meat, potatoes are usually a pretty safe veggie, usually cooking whatever veggie your serving is helpful too. corn is tasty... but not a good thing later. minimal amounts of leafy greens.
things with low acid and low dairy content are better. spicy foods aren't good for sensitive tummies. hmm, personally i'm not a soup person, but soup or mild chili, with noodles if you're so inclined are usually safe.

i hope that helps you out some! i can give you more info if you ever need it!

I just have angry tummy, but when I was little for some reason Fruit Loops calmed the savage beast. Otherwise I eat crystallized ginger like it's an after dinner mint. It soothes all of my problems, and it doesn't hurt that I love the hell out of that stuff. Otherwise, no, I'm of no use other than to say I'm so sorry.

oooh, where do you find the ginger? i chew a LOT of mint gum, so a little variety would be nice!

Most larger grocery stores will have jars of crystallized ginger in the spice section.

Farmer's markets usually. I live near two and can get an entire tub for $4 or so bucks. I also work next to a Fresh Market which is like a tiny, neighborhood whole foods, so they carry it too but it's of course way over priced. I'd imagine Asian markets or even Australian bakeries should have it. Hell, you could even go super ghetto and hit the Asian/International aisle of your supermarket and see if you can't find pickled ginger. Not as fun and candy like, but it may do the same kind of trick. Um...Cost Plus World Market carries Ginger Babies which if I'm not mistaken is an entire brand of ginger candies. Uh. I'm so tired I hope any of this is helpful I'm literally purging brain for relevant suggestions.

I have celiac and love to drink warmed broth from a carton and if I feel adventurous I'll boil some rice pasta.

I'm a little confused. Aren't all of those foods understood to be responsible for triggering flare-ups?

I think, but am not completely certain that Crohns and gluten (wheat) allergies are two entirely different things, just have similiar symptoms and are related to food reactions. I have one friend with chrohns that can't eat anything with corn in it (no cheese corn puffs, popcorn or tortillas for her!) and another that can't do wheat gluten, dairy, sugar, etc. Have another friend that I have no idea what she eats, as she's allergic to all that and also soy products and...well, everything.

@Eidna is right, for me it's dairy and acidic things like orange juice or processed tomato products (usually the pasta sauce in jars), and eating leafy vegetables is like digesting broken glass later. I do very well with carbs starches and sugar.
but some days i can eat anything i'd like, and other days water makes me feel sick.

my mom (who has it too) describes it as asthma of the intestines...

You really do sound exactly like my husband in terms of what you eat/what affects you, haha. He's conflabit on LJ.
