1840 - Claude Monet
Probably the most famous French impressionist painter. He is my favorite... it was incredible seeing one of his series from "Water Lilies" at MOMA in New York.

Lucky you! that will be fantastic. One of the coolest things about MOMA in New York is the space they built for the water lilies painting. It is in a big open space so you can see it from very far away and then walk up to it until you see the brush strokes. Very Cool!

Ouch . . that is so sad (that Copeland will now forever be associated with beef) . . but, you're absolutely right. Luckily, I studied and knew his music before that commercial, so I can disassociate! It's hard to think of a more "American" composer . . . maybe Bernstein? Gershwin? Still, Copeland is the father of American symphony.
