1862 - Claude Debussy
This French composer created some really fantastic work at the end of the 19th century.
John is absolutely entranced by "Clair de lune" which was used to great effect in the movie "Frankie and Johnny"

(Howdy - you're friends of several of my LJ friends, so you pop up from time to time on a random perusal of /friendsfriends)

I never studied enough Debussy when I was still actively pursuing my piano classes, though he was heavily referenced in my musicology and conducing classes. I *adore* his work.

I don't know if you're familiar with this specific crossover (some people go "Well, DUH, Alex!" when I tell them, while others go "What are you talking about?) - but Art of Noise did "The Seduction of Claude Debussy" with John Hurt doing the narrative. It has some - mmm - awkward - rappy bits, but I think it's a brilliant exploration of some of his work with modern instrumentation and modern musicality.

(And if you know - well, nothing to see here move along! :)

No, I wasn't familiar with this - but I found the following on youtube.

Thanks for letting me know!

This seems somehow appropriate for AoN doing Debussy with Hurt's voice.

(And I love this section of narration; it's so *pointed*. "He believed in...Debussy.")

I know - I just couldn't resist this "Absurdist" dance interpretation of the piece!

Here is a really, really beautiful version of 'Clair de Lune' by Stokowski and the Philadelphia Orchestra
