When asked why he liked cats, Suzaku never had a straight answer. Not really. It wasn’t because they were soft and warm (they were, and he loved petting their fur, loved how they purred when they curled up against his chest). Nor was it because he found their contradictory nature fascinating (though he did think cats were fascinating in their versatility, mysterious and familiar alike).
No, Suzaku never really actually thought about em why he like cats: he just did. He never thought twice about giving a stray cat food, or saving an injured kitty from drowning. Nor did he ever muse over why he’d kept a cat in the shrine when he’d been a boy. It had just seemed natural to him, cruel even not to do those things.

And Suzaku certainly never thought about why he liked Arthur, the cat he and Euphy had first picked up on that fateful day, that much.

He just did. Even if that cat did bite him a lot.
