Questions for a college paper about SRS in other countries.

I have a friend who attends university and has been assigned a paper regarding people going to other countries (outside of the US) for surgeries. She has chosen trans people who travel out of country for SRS as her topic. I don't think it's so much a question of within the US or without. For many people, it's simply the quality of a given surgeon's work. With so few surgeons to choose from, this is quite understandable. Secondary to that, it's probably a question of $$$, the Thai surgeons being cheaper.

Why did you choose to go out of the US for your surgery?

Not everyone on Live Journal lives in the USA to begin with. I live in Australia, though I had my surgery in Phuket. Why go there and not to Sydney? Because a very close friend had done so and had bad results. My intuition told me that Phuket was the right place to go.

How much cheaper was it for you to use this option for your SRS than if you were to stay in the US?

Well, going to the USA would have added a big expense on return air travel. Also, a 16 hour trip after surgery isn't the best option maybe. As it was, I actually had surgery lined up here in Australia, but GST was just coming in and the hospital would not give me a quote on what it would cost. The hospital+surgery cost in Phuket was a quoted as a flat $US 5000.

Also any general information about your experience and decision would be appreciated.

My surgery was back in 2000. Phuket International Hospital was clean and professional, with friendly staff, and teh surgery result overall was a success.
