I've lost my mother. She's not dead or anything, we just aren't talking any more. But then, she wasn't particularly supportive to start with, so it's no big surprise.
The first person I "came out" to was my best friend from middle school. We used to chat on IM every day, and though I didn't know the vocabulary of gender identity, I told him I wasn't the girl I looked like on the outside, and he understood. I never took steps toward transition because I didn't know they existed, and because I didn't think there was anything to do, I tried not to obsess over what I couldn't change. Knowing that someone I trusted was keeping my secret safe made it easier to remain closeted to everyone else, and I'm not sure I'd have survived if he hadn't been there to just listen when it was all too much
