We will figure out the actual cost when we get to that point, I'm just trying to see what it cost other people so I can get an idea in my head of how much it might cost us. Right now, I'm just in the dark, and having been blindsided by hospital fees before, shedding even just a little bit of light on the matter would put my mind at ease.

Thank you for your input, though.

There is going to be such a wide range of costs that asking out here on the internet isn't going to be as helpful. Some people will pay per test, others will pay only copays for some tests. I would suggest posting in the FTM Boston group (linked from my profile), if you want to get more precise info about Fenway's charges. Or the Compass group if you are a member of that. If you have a list of the tests, you might even be able to call Fenway to get self-pay costs. Although some of their bloodwork gets sent out, so they might not have that info handy ( ... )

Yeah, I'd definitely call the places you might be using. Be clear you're asking about the no insurance costs; I found a lot of places didn't believe me when I had to ask for "and if my insurance won't pay..." costs when I had crappy insurance (but everyone has insurance that'll pay for this!) so I had to keep clarifying that was really what I meant. I usually was able to get costs, though, and even an estimate is better than a surprise.

i went to fenway in boston (from maine, nonetheless). i am insured. my first round of bloodwork ended up costing somewhere around $900, AFTER they billed my insurance. i hope you have a good experience at fenway, but parts of mine were not super-good. some parts were really good, like how easy it was to utilize their informed consent process to get onto testosterone and that my doctor (teresa mclaughlin) there regularly addressed other staff (nurses, front-desk staff)'s mispronouning of me.

I go to a non-profit clinic, and all my labs combines (out of pocket, at the base of their sliding scale) cost $50. Full price there, for someone making a lot of money, would be something like $125-150, I think. That includes cholesterol, Free and Total T, CBC, a liver panel...I forget what all else. The charge is per test, with the most expensive being the $25 for the two T levels.

On the other hand, I've gone to a Labcorp that billed my insurance, and would up with something like $200 in co-pays. It really is a YMMV situation, with different places charging dramatically different fees. I'd second the advice to ask guys in your area where they go and how much it costs, in addition to asking your doctor/clinic. If Fenway is expensive, you can ask to get your labs done elsewhere and faxed in, but you would need to know where you want to go instead. Good luck!
