So I'm wanting to switch to a vegan diet but nonvegans keep saying soy milk actually gets in the way of HRT because of some funky thing with protoestrogen or something like that. Does anyone know if this is true?

You could always just drink rice/oat/almond milk and eat beans/legumes, therefore eliminating the soy all together but remaining vegan. =)

I think this is mainly something people bring up to discourage people from taking phytoestrogen supplements. If the doses from soy milk really made that much of a difference, you'd have huge clusters of girls with pubertal complications in areas of East Asia with high soy consumption.

A very good point.

I'd assume your doctor for your transition would have some knowledge of this too, if you haven't asked. Also, there are alternatives to soy milk such as rice milk and I think almond milk. Rice milk (Rice Dream is what's available here) can be pretty good and I prefer it to many brands of soy milk, but I've never tried almond milk. I'd also be hesitant to make a particular nut or nut product a major part of my diet as nuts are one of the easiest things to develop food sensitivities and allergies to.

I've heard that it is true, but I don't have any conclusive evidence. However, I'm not fond of soy in general because of other reasons, so I have given up on veggie patties and the like. There are a lot of people who are allergic to soy, wheat and other common allergens, and who also happen to be vegan, so it won't be as difficult as you might think to avoid soy.

A great alternative to pseudo-meat products is beans for protein, and then the many other types of milk available (Coconut, almond, hemp, etc.) that contain no soy. Coconut milk is thick and rich, and I recommend not getting the unsweetened kind.

I gonna agree with most of the people above. Unless you eat soy and only soy, I wouldn't worry about it. Even if you weren't transitioning, overdosing on soy isn't a good idea.

Not killing animals and being more compassionate is a good idea though: go vegan!
