male pattern baldness when taking T

Nov 27, 2009 14:51

I just had a curious thought. I myself identify as female, but I have a question for the guys here. When taking T over an extended period of time (years or more), is male-pattern baldness a common occurrence? I was mostly just curious.

It can be if it runs in the family (on your mom's side).

Actually, on either side; the baldness gene is carried on the X chromosome. If you're XY, the baldness gene is going to come from your mother; if you're XX, it can come from either side.

Well, there's finasteride. Could trans guys take that to stop baldness?

yeah. although, blocking DHT could decelerate some desired "masculinization," and it's a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor which also can also interfere with allopregnanolone synthesis, with unacceptable mood side effects for some people.
