Depends on what the binder's made out of and how long you're going to go swimming.
From what I know of swimsuits, lycra and spandex get eaten up by the chlorine in pools. If you're only swimming for a short while, a lycra or spandex binder will probably hold up (I'm assuming a lycra binder has a stronger/thicker blend than a lycra suit, considering you can easily machine-wash a lycra binder, but not a lycra suit). A polyester binder would hold up better, but you should probably wash it out ASAP after swimming so the chemicals in the pool don't wreck it.
Rinse your binder well after each swim in the ocean or pools. Chlorine and salt water are bad for spandex. Consider buying a rash guard made for aquatic adventuring.
