First of all, I'm not sure why you were on such a low dose in the first place. Are you on delatestryl or testosterone cypionate? I was on the cypionate and it was actually worse than pms. I thought I was going to go insane. I'm in my late 40s, and I can tell you, this stuff is crap for me. I take 1cc every 10 days. Anything higher than that and I my hair starts falling out. LOL Does your Dr realize you're an ftm?? It almost sounds like he doesnt, or isnt sure what to do for someone like you. Get a different Dr. Or..go to www.ratemd.com and find out more about the one you're seeing. Good luck chuck.
the dosage i take is pretty standard. the dr who prescribed it to me oversees more than 600 trans folks' hrt and the 1/2 cc every week (or 1 cc every 2 weeks) is the standard dosage she gives to most trans men. the doctor who originally prescribed it to me is not someone i see anymore, but my current doctor also works with a lot of trans patients and oversees my hrt and stuff and should know what he's talking about with this. i haven't been seeing him that long and my work is actually switching to an hmo at the end of the month so i have to find a new doctor anyway. we'll see. i really just wish someone would take this seriously and help me figure out what to do with my hormones though.
1/2 a CC every week or 1 cc every two weeks is a common dose. I take half of that (and yes, my doctor knows I'm FTM and would never prescribe that high of a dose if I wasn't) and my levels are in the healthy male range.
so were you prescribed progesterone per se or a progestin? either way, the different is complex and nuanced.
progestagens (to which both the different progestagens and progesterone belong) are a class of hormone of their own, outside of androgens and estrogens. their effects are very complex, but basically the hormone is designed to support pregnancy. therefore it signals (according to levels) different things to other hormone levels, among other things
each progestin has different effects, additionally, and none of them are quite like progesterone itself. some of them actually have androgenic activity! and some of them SUPPRESS androgen production and activity.
as to whether this is a good idea is between you and your doctor. if you think it's a bad idea, try getting a second opinion. but the truth is more complicated than to consider it a "female hormone".
whoever replied and deleted their response about medroxyprogesterone suppressing menstruation:
i don't think it clicked at all to me that this is the generic name for depo provera. this is totally weird because i have not menstruated since about a week after i started taking testosterone over 2 years ago, and my doctor knows this, so that is really interesting. i guess that's not what i meant when i said i have not seen results, i more mean that i have almost no facial hair, and only started really growing facial hair during the period of time that i had doubled my dose. my voice has also changed some but not a ton and my body fat and muscle and stuff has not redistributed at all.
I took medroxyprogesterone as an estrogen blocker for 2 years during high school. It stopped menstruation and had a very slight androgenic effect on me (slight hair growth, body smell, etc). I think it would probably help T have more of an effect
( ... )
i don't have experience with the rx you're referring to but t has not worked for me the way i think it should (still bleeding after 6 years on it for example). i added lupron and i'm seeing more changes, more rapidly than previously. for me, this is to test as well i can how my body will react to an ooverectomy. i don't know what your situation is but (aside from menopausal crap), this seems to be working significantly better for me than t alone.
