Confusion of Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation

There was a special on NBC about whether or not you can tell a child wil be gay when they grow up. But the focus of a show was a little boy who painted his nails pink and played with barbies. He SAID IN THE SHOW that he thought he should have been born a girl and wants to be a girl. I do not understand why NBC thinks this has anything to do with ( Read more... )

I really wish they had at least mentioned the possibility of the child being transgendered too. However, they were speaking entirely about statistical probabilities. And statistically, according to studies, children who are gender variant, significantly grow up to be homosexual. Slightly more so with boys than girls. So while I wish the possibility had been mentioned, the show was about the scientific studies regarding homosexuality and it may have been a derailment of the show to bring in the transgender card.

The only problem with those studies are that they are done primarily by Zucker up at The Clarke in Ontario, a notorious reparative therapist who aggressively tries to convert kids to be straight cisgendered, but considers gay to be a step up from trans. I've run into at least two of his victims that I can think of who agreed to not be trans to escape his clutches and went on to transition outside of the system in their 20s.

The influence Zucker has on the ex-gay movement by providing material that supports reparative therapy is currently being discussed on ex-gay watch.

I watched that. All I could think is that "they're trying to make a 6-year-old kid tell them who he finds attractive.

I mean, damn.
Crazy NBC.

For a second I thought it was going to be the Oprah, "I look up to Kim Possible and want to be just like her!" boy, but this is madness. Who the hell thinks Neopets: The Darkest Faerie is a good game!? Don't give me none of that, "Only a girl would!" sass either.

Absurdity aside, yeah. As much as even they're admitting it, this is really heavy on the stereotypes. The girly twin seems to be around only as a leg-to-stand-on for the, "Feminine males are more gay than masculine males!" mantra they plugged, but did nothing about. I seriously doubt Howie Mandel is gay. Plus, you know, not touching on crossdressers and drag queens that are married to women and have kids, and are happy with their lives.

So much potential turned into a rerun of Montel Springer Raphael ( insert other talk show hosts here ). You always disappoint me, television.

I'd also like to point out that not everyone who is trans had the trans childhood. I myself (along with others I know) didn't get that 'wrong' feeling till about 16. And then it just got worse, and worse.. yeah.
