I'm not staying near the venue at all (Northcote) so don't know that I'll be reliable in volunteering. I've also done a lot of volunteering for cons in the past few years and am wondering about taking a break from that for one con.
volunteering for a Worldon is quite a different experience from volunteering at a regional convention. For starters, there's heaps more people. The range of jobs is different too and you can choose just how many hours you do and at what times you will be available. Even if you only volunteer for one hour at the rego desk or act as a gopher for an hour, then you are contributing. It's not like at a Swancon where you may end up "volunteering" for the whole event.
One of the easiest jobs is distributing the daily newsletter to the newsletter stands. It takes a few minutes and then your done.
I think that also given the whole women and worldcon thing that I'm less interested in doing invisible work overall. I'm willing to do things that are visible and involve conversations that shift the comfortable sexism going on, inadvertent though it is, but not more invisible stuff that makes it appear I'm supporting the way the institution currently stands.
Hope that makes sense. I'm looking forward to seeing the programme. I'm also still thinking of ideas that I can suggest for it.

in answer to your Aussiecon question..
first step: fill in a program participant form
next step: add yourself to the volunteer register (for general convention volunteering and pre-con volunteering)
