One of the things that happened today was that during the course of the forum, when I was sharing about what I'd been looking at, I came out as being poly.

maharetr, and a couple of others said that the entire audience visibly moved, and started murmuring

That was very brave of you and I am glad you had a positive response.

I often used to feel strange when mixing with people outside of my fannish friends - but had an epiphany a few years ago where I flipped myself around emotionally and decided it was more sad that they were so rigid in their expectations of what was 'normal' and 'acceptable' that they were the ones missing out, not me!

This is true - but I was also cutting myself off from some pretty awesome people because I was afraid that they wouldn't want to know me... not I know differently.

I totally agree that if you aren't honest with people, you don't give them the opportunity to know you properly.
