Periodical Science Department Information Post

Welcome to the ship, to all of the new people I have been accidentally ignoring since the last release from the pod caverns. I discovered a new species of slug in the water at hydroponics and I've spent the last few weeks cultivating and breeding my own tank of them because I believe I'm starting to lose my mind ( Read more... )

I'd be glad to join the department, if you'll take me; it's about time I started to help people on this ship.

(They're regular slugs, he promises. This one's name is Pedro! :D ) notlewis January 25 2011, 06:21:35 UTC
Of course. Do you have an area of expertise?

I specialize in biochemistry and theoretical physics.

Excelente. We could use more physicists around here. I'm a biologist first and foremost, but I dabble in chemistry and engineering when I can.

That's where you've been? Slugs?

...I'm not sure if I should be offended or laughing.

Before you do either, remember that I wrote my master's thesis on invertebrate mobility and that there was literally nothing better to do in my hometown than watch slugs.

There's enough information on that subject to write a thesis?

...You need to get out more.

Why do you think I went to university in Madrid? Lethal boredom was the number one cause of death in Pueblo. Well... number two.

Anyway, you may laugh but you have to hear me out. They come in all different colors and they seem to have a regenerative ability similar to an earthworm if they are bisected-- except both halves form into a new organism! It really is fascinating.

Sí, we've got several actually. There are sometimes a lot of crossover projects to do.

We've had... a few problems with biological weaponry. Most in the vein of bioweapon viruses. But I don't think squirrels with lasers are really going to be all that helpful in the long run anyway.

Dr. Sera -

Would you be an appropriate focal for information on project(s) that could have potential use as a weapon, but could also be quite dangerous to construct/deploy? Or perhaps there is someone in your department who would be interested in evaluating such a project?

That depends. Are the projects science-related rather than more suited for engineering?

Also, exactly how dangerous are we talking about?

As part of my training with the Vizsnunishne Mercenaries, I was required to memorize the blueprints and construction requirements for several devices. I assume that an anti-gravity engine would not be of much use (there is already artificial gravity onboard, therefore you have what is necessary to create such a device anyway), but I also know how to make an anti-inertial projector.

While such a projector could be used as a weapon (it is generally used for travel where I come from), I don't know if it will operate under the current laws of physics of this dimension, or for that matter other dimension(s) where it might be deployed. Also, I don't know if the components to build it are available, or can be created onboard/purchased elsewhere.

If someone in the Science Department has already investigated anti-inertial devices, or might be interested in doing so in the future, I would be happy to come down and dictate/draw what I know.

That's... sounds like an engineering thing. I would contact someone from their department.

Mind if I have a look around at the facilities? I have a bit of experience in these fields. No weapons, naturally. Not much for that sort of thing.
